Havering Young People’s Mentor Service
The Havering Young People’s Mentor Service provides support to Havering children and young people aged 10-18 to make positive choices and achieve their goals.
Which young people can use this service?
The service is accessible to any Havering child or young person aged 10-18, who would benefit from 6 months of support in the following areas.
- Education, training or employment
- Anti-social and youth offending behaviour
- Substance misuse
- Healthy relationships and bullying
- Bereavement and loss
- Mental health
- Immigration
- Other family issues
What can the service offer a young person?
A Young Person’s Mentor is a fully trained and checked volunteer who commits to 6 months of visits of 1-2 hours at a time (should the young person wish to continue for this length of time).
During this time, each young person will be able to pick the activities that they do with their mentor and put together a plan to be able to achieve their chosen goals.
They will also be invited to come along to a monthly group with other young people and their mentors. The service is led by the young person at every stage.
How is a young person matched with their mentor?
When a referral is accepted, the Early Help Volunteer Co-ordinator will meet with the young person to capture their thoughts and wishes regarding the mentor that they would like to be matched with, and what they want to gain from the service.
A volunteer matching this profile is approached, and an initial, introduction meeting will take place with the young person and their family, to ensure both parties are comfortable before regular visits begin.
