We have a statutory duty under Section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 to provide a non-attended funeral for anyone that dies in our borough (whether a resident or not) and do not have family or friends willing and able to take responsibility for funeral arrangements.
A Public Health Funeral includes an unattended cremation or burial (where wishes are known) without a memorial service.
Costs of the funeral are claimed from the deceased estate up to the full amount or less if there is not enough money in the estate to meet the full costs.
If you are a family member or friend seeking to arrange a funeral, require financial support and meet the criteria, you can apply for a funeral expenses payment grant through the GOV.UK website.
If you do not meet the criteria and need us to arrange a Public Health Funeral please contact us through our online contact form.
