Havering Council has officially responded to the consultation on proposals to extend the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to Havering.
Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:
"The Council recognises the negative impact of poor air quality on the lives of Havering residents but does not agree expanding the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is one of the right and fair ways to address the problem.
"The ULEZ charge will hit the borough's less well-off residents in their pockets much more than others.
"We hope to work with Transport for London and the Mayor of London to cut vehicle pollution and reduce the number of unnecessary journeys made, but we oppose the expansion of ULEZ as a way of doing this.
"As one of the biggest London Boroughs, we do not have the investment in public transport like inner London and therefore many depend on their cars to get around. In particular if you need to travel from north to south of the borough.
"We would therefore like this taken into account as part of the consultation around ULEZ."
