Havering Council has officially reopened the newly revamped space at Hitchin Close Green in Harold Hill, following extensive restoration works last month (May 2023).

The work included clearing out rows of overgrown brambles, shrubs and weeds, as well as installing new fencing along the roadside to create a bright and safe place for residents to spend time.

As part of the works, contractors spent two days clearing out the stream and weir that runs through the site, removing any litter and dumped rubbish, as well as overgrown vegetation that is known to cause flooding on the green.

To cap off the project, the Council installed a brand new entrance archway along the Noak Hill Road entrance, welcoming visitors to the new Hitchin Close Green.

New flowerbeds and waste bins have been added along the path to encourage residents to keep the green clean and tidy for everyone.

Councillor Paul McGeary, Cabinet Member for Housing, was joined by fellow Gooshays Ward Councillors for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday 20 June, which signalled the end of the works.

The project was carried out by Havering’s contractors Mears and K&T Heating, alongside council services and volunteers.

Members of the Harold Hill Wombles led by Michelle Squier were also on-site volunteering their time to help with the project.

This is part of the Council’s commitment to social value, giving residents a more welcoming and safe space to enjoy.

Hitchin Close Green is one of five sites the Council has earmarked to receive official village green status.

If approved, the registration of Hitchin Close Green as a village green will protect the site from any housing developments ‘in perpetuity’, meaning future generations will be able to enjoy the green space.

Councillor Paul McGeary, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

"I am thrilled to be here for the official reopening of Hitchin Close Green in Harold Hill after its remarkable transformation.

“It’s been incredible to see the work taking place across the site, which now feels so much safer and more welcoming for residents.

"The collaborative efforts of our dedicated contractors, council services, and volunteers have made this project a success.

“We are now working towards getting village green status for Hitchin Close Green, so we can ensure that future generations can cherish this precious green space for years to come.

"Together, we are committed to enhancing spaces across our community."
