Councillor Gillian Ford, Deputy Leader of Havering Council, said: "We are aware of two recent fires at the Arnolds Field site on Launders Lane.

"One fire occurred yesterday (16 August 2023) at 4am, and a second fire occurred this morning (17 August 2023) at 6am.

"We have been in contact with the London Fire Brigade; both fires were extinguished by two pumping appliances from New Road.

"The impact of the fire on air quality was picked up by the ring of monitors installed by the Council around the site.

"Air Quality data is reported in real time on the Breathe London website which showed a very sudden peak in particulates which returned to normal after a number of hours.

"Air Quality monitoring is being used to understand any risks to health and how best to remediate the site which has been blighted by historic fly tipping.

"We are working with professional agencies (UK Health Security Agency and the Environment Agency), academic partners (Imperial College London), and specialist contractors TRL who have both installed specialised equipment on behalf of the Council to better understand the impact of these fires on air quality and any potential health risks."
