A fly-tipper has been fined a total of £700 after being tracked down by Havering Council’s enforcement team.
The litter lout was captured on CCTV driving into South Hornchurch Community car park on 18 March and dumping household waste from the back of a vehicle, before leaving again.
The Council’s environmental enforcement officers investigated and managed to track the vehicle owner to a property in a neighbouring borough.
A Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) for £400 was issued to the person, who was also ordered to pay £300 for failing to disclose a valid authorisation to carry waste.
The Council continues to enforce against those that fly tip, where evidence can be secured.
From April 2022 to March 2023, over 600 FPNs were served for dumped waste-related offences in Havering.
In the past three months alone up to August, the Council has served a further 33 FPNs for fly-tipping offences.
The Council’s enforcement teams also carry out joint operations with the police on issuing on-the-spot action against unlicensed waste carriers, to check that drivers carrying waste have the correct licences to do so.
Councillor Barry Mugglestone, Cabinet Member for Environment said:
“We won’t tolerate the illegal dumping of waste in our borough and as this example shows, we will take the necessary action against those who think they can get away with it.
“Fly-tipping is a serious crime which negatively affects our residents, businesses and the local environment.
"Each year we’re left with unnecessary clean-up costs of around one million pounds with council taxpayers left to pick up the bill.
“We ask residents to not only dispose of their rubbish legally and responsibly themselves, but also check that any waste carriers they are paying to get rid of rubbish, that they have the correct licence.
“We also continue to encourage residents to report fly-tipping and help us keep our borough cleaner.”
