Havering Council is bringing back the Warm Spaces network to help residents fight the cold this winter.
Warm Spaces are designated venues based across the borough, offering a heated, safe, and friendly environment, for those struggling to keep their homes warm.
The network includes libraries, leisure centres, and community hubs with some venues providing not only warmth but also hot drinks, activities, and free Wi-Fi.
Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:
"Our warm spaces network proved to be a valuable help to residents and families last year, so it’s great to see the network return for this coming winter.
“We're committed to ensuring no one faces the cold alone and our warm spaces initiative is one of many things we are doing to help residents with the ongoing cost of living challenge as the colder weather sets in.”
Residents should be aware that opening times of venues may vary, so we encourage people to check with each venue before visiting.
In addition to these warm spaces, residents can also visit local libraries, Sapphire Ice and Leisure (Romford), and Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre (Hornchurch) during opening hours, providing a cosy environment.
The two Community Hubs within Harold Hill and Rainham Libraries also offer a Community Food Shop, which are managed by Peabody.
These shops provide for a £6 shop of groceries worth up to £20 (one £6 shop per household).
Shoppers can choose from a variety of foods including meat, dairy, fresh fruit and veg as well as non-perishable, chilled and frozen foods, plus toiletries.
Membership is available to anyone who lives in Havering, you only need to supply your residential address at one of the Food Shops.
Grocery items are provided through supermarket donations collected and distributed through the Felix Food Project and local businesses.
Libraries are also currently running a warm coats initiative until March 2024, offering free coats to those in need.
