Fleet Close has been officially named as a Village Green in Havering, marking a significant milestone in the preservation of local much-loved green spaces in the borough.
It also represents the first of five village green celebrations this summer.
Council Leader, Councillor Ray Morgon, Councillor Graham Williamson, and Ward Councillors Gillian Ford, Phil Ruck, and John Tyler, along with a large number of residents from the surrounding community attended the formal dedication ceremony, held on Saturday 13 July.
Village Green status ensures that Fleet Close will remain undeveloped in perpetuity, safeguarding the area for the enjoyment of future generations. This designation is a testament to the commitment of the council and the community to protect and maintain Havering’s much-loved green spaces.
Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“You can’t underestimate how green spaces like Fleet Close play an integral role in building connections between our residents, so we all feel a sense of community and pride in our vibrant borough.
“I am so pleased to celebrate this first milestone, as we deliver on our promise to our residents to protect these much-loved green spaces.”
Local resident Steve Clarke, who has lived on Fleet Close for many years and regularly uses the park, expressed his enthusiasm for the newly designated Village Green.
"The Council have done a good job in the park, it has never looked better and it is nice to see everyone here today.
“I’m delighted that we've got Village Green status for Fleet Close.
"I'm really happy that my children and grandchildren and all future generations will be able to enjoy it."
The formal dedication ceremony was a celebration of community spirit, highlighting the importance of preserving green spaces within urban areas, and was followed by cakes and cookies on the green, courtesy of the local ward councillors.
