Havering Council has teamed up with local charity, Here to Help Havering, to provide furniture, donated by former residents of Waterloo Estate, to those in need within the community.
Waterloo Estate is part of the first phase of the Council’s 12 Estates regeneration joint venture with Wates Residential, which will provide approximately 3,200 new homes for local people.
During the relocation process, many residents decided to buy new furniture and white goods, leaving their old ones behind.
Tenants were asked if they would like to donate their old furniture instead of throwing it away or selling it on. Many wanted to take part and were really happy that their unwanted goods could be used to help those more in need.
Councillor Damian White, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“I am overwhelmed with the response we have had from our tenants, and their willingness to donate furniture to people less fortunate in the community. I am told one of the recipients was a family with three children, who now have two new sofas as a result of this project.
“On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank everybody involved. This is another great example of how we can all work together to improve the lives of our local residents.”
Trudy Bettinelli, from Here to Help Havering, said:
“It’s been lovely getting to work together with Havering Council on this great project to support residents that find themselves in need, and we’re very grateful to the tenants for their support and donations.”
