Speed limits and cameras
Speed limits
Speed limits are set at levels appropriate to the surrounding environment and by following guidance set by the Department for Transport. The majority of speed limits in urban street lit areas are 30 miles per hour (mph) but can be higher in rural and semi-rural areas where the environment adjacent to the roads are different.
Speed limits can be lowered or raised following the criteria set out by the Department for Transport. Where new limits are proposed there is a formal consultation process required and the Metropolitan Police would also need to agree to any change as they are the authority in charge of enforcing speed limits.
Cameras
The purpose of speed safety cameras is to change driver behaviour.
They are only used when people break speed limits. When this happens a camera detects the offence and provides evidence for a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).
The minimum penalty is £60 and three penalty points on your driving licence.
If you see a faulty camera please contact Transport for London on 0343 222 1234.
