Wave 1 - Summer 2023
10 schools took part in the Havering Youth Wellbeing Census during June and July 2023.
This was a total of 2,287 students across year groups 8 and 10, representing 36 percent coverage of the target demographic.
The results of the survey will help Havering Council to understand the state of wellbeing across age groups and consider actions to support young people’s mental wellbeing.
Participating schools have each received an interactive report which allows them to compare the results for their school to those of all schools.
These schools have also been offered a 1:1 session with a consultant from the Child Outcomes Research Consortium to talk through their results and think about next steps.
This feedback will inform and complement the work that schools are already undertaking to support the wellbeing of their pupils.
Findings from Wave 1
Havering Council and local services have identified some key findings from Wave 1 of the census.
- Only 33 percent of girls undertake physical activity on 5-7 days per week compared to 54 percent of boys.
- 36 percent of girls and 21 percent of boys feel lonely sometimes often or always.
- 22 percent of pupils in Year 8 and 22 percent of young people with SEN had been bullied 4 or more times in the last 6 months.
- 16 percent of children with SEN reported experiencing discrimination due to disability
- 10 percent of young people had experienced discrimination based on race, skin colour or where they were born.
- Only 70 percent of young people living in the North locality feel safe in their local area and a high proportion are concerned about gangs, drug dealing and carrying knives.
The council is working with local services and young people to explore these findings and identify actions to address these areas of concern.
